I used to use to map out my cycles using their BBT Charting tool. I would put on the calendar each month things like: the first day of my period and all other changes during my cycle (i.e. vaginal mucus consistency, temperature, mood). Over about 6 months I began to notice a pattern and determined that even though my cycles were any where from 32 to 46 days long the other symptoms of ovulation were consistently happening 15 to 16 days after the first day of my last period.
After I learned my cycle we conceived on our 2nd try. So yes it is possible to detect ovulation with an irregular cycle. Also if you have charted it out and are still not sure, you can go to the drug store and buy some ovulation tests. They work just like pregnancy tests (pee on the stick type) to know for sure if you are ovulating.
Hope this helps :)
