Is it Teething or am I creating a habit?

My son is 10 months old, he has slept through the night since he was 5 months old, he would wake perhaps once a night for the dummy but that would be it. However the past few weeks he has been waking a bit through the night (at least 3-4 times). He has not got any teeth yet but does show signs of teething with the excessive dribble, rubbing the ears, the gums look swollen and you can occasionally see the whites of the teeth at the bottom.

I understand that this can be a painful time for my son with his teeth but he is waking up around 2am every morning and the only way I can get him back to sleep again is if I give him 100ml of milk. Once he has this he will go back off to sleep and wake up between 7.30-8.30am. By giving him the milk to get him back to sleep and I creating a habit as I dont want to have to do this every morning or is it a comfort thing for him whilst he is teething?

I've tried to give him water instead but he knows the difference and will not drink the water at night.

Please help.

I don't think it's a bad habit. He is communicating something to you by crying.. you figured out what he needed. That's what you're supposed to do. You're doing fine. Whether or not it's teething, it's really normal for babies/toddlers to go through many different phases of sleep. They may go through many months of sleeping through, then weeks or months of waking at night. Then they'll be back to sleeping through without you changing anything. That's just normal because their bodies and minds are changing so rapidly. You're doing a great job.

Maybe he has just recently gone through a growth spurt and needs a little extra food during the day so he doesn't need to wake up for more. Have you tried to increase his daily feedings to see if that helps at all?

Thanks for the feed back. I have increased his food and he lets me know when he is not hungry. He is a very good eater. I'll keep trying different things and see if I find a solution. He is growning very quickly he grew 5cm in under two months and is tall for his age and he eats heaps but is burning it off with all the crawling and climbing etc he is doing so he will eat all the time. Thanks again for your feedback.
