Is your tot also clingy?

I am now 18 weeks pregnant with our second child but our daughter of 18 months is extremely clingy. She constantly wants me to pick her up, cries terribly when I leave the room. Is this normal?

It's true that most kids go through phases related to attachment. The proccess is often refered to as "separation anxiety"--that stage of development where children really begin to comprehend the individual nature of themselves and those around them. This can be quite scary to small children so they seek security and comfort from parents. Generally this a phase that lasts a little while then disappears as the child matures.

There are some things you can do to help this proccess along: Set limits! Only pick your daughter up when she is hurt or if safety is an issue, for example. Otherwise let her fuss and cry and comfort herself. You can talk to her and encourage her to use her favorite toy or blanket for this purpose. With time and patience this phase should resolve itself. Good luck!

My son was the same way. It is part of the attachment phase. I loved that phase cause I knew eventually he wouldn't be clinging anymore and then I would miss it. I say enjoy the stage right now before it goes away. Time goes by way too fast. before you know it they grow up to be little independent children.
