Mother of 1 running in home day care -- Need advice!

I want to open my own daycare in my home. Just 6 kids. I currently am the director of a daycare with 20 kids, but I just had my own and I really want to be home with her. She is 2 months old. I have basically everything figured out except what to do if my daughter needs to go to the dr? I don't want anyone else her. Also, in the future I want to have more children. What do I do when I have to go to the dr or when I have my baby and need maternity leave or at least time to heal?

Network with other stay home moms and in home day care moms. Even college students. When you have a doc appointment those are great people to call on to come over and cover you. My husband has a flexible schedule and I also use him. Try to make your appointments at easy times of the day.....nap times or when you have low numbers.

For maternity leave it is a bitter/sweet thing. Since you are boss you get to decide how much time you are taking off. Bitter part of it is that it is all unpaid and your families have to find other care during that time. Another option is hiring someone to take your place during your time off. Makes it nice for your day care families but might be hard on you and your family. This will be my second go around with doing maternity leave while doing in home. Both times I have been due in May, do I close down for the summer. Summer is nice as it gives high school and college kids as possible options for my families to use. I have not lost any of my families for taking that time off. I give them about 5 to 6 months notice of the ball park dates for ending and starting back up so they have plenty of time to make arrangements. I have never regretted taking that time off.

One thing that is different from center versus in home is that families realize there are days you will take off and close. They have back up plans and options. They are choosing you because you are not a center
