My 11 year old has NVLD (Non-Verbal Learning Disorder) and Intermittent Explosive Disorder on meds but not getting better

My son is currently taking Resperidone and Depakote for his violent outburst and he doesn't seem to be getting any better. I just recently found out that Resperidone causes outburst so I am going to speak with the Psychiatrist about taking him off of it. I am trying to network with other parents that have the same issues so I can better deal with my son. I am considering having him retested, because I think he may have aspergers. Does anyone have any suggestions on what other medications I should try. I really don't want to put my son in the hospital, because the facilities here in Illinois don't have the best reputation.

Hi Jessica, Hope you don't mind me replying to you and sorry you having troubles, I'm sorry I can't comment on your particular problem, or offer medication suggestions. I just wanted to show my support.
I have a brother with learning difficulties.
Also and more relevant my cousin's son has always had issues and never any real diagnosis until last month when they finally labelled him as Autistic, after years of my cousin trying to find out what was wrong, it's a life changing diagnosis, but also helps make sense of everything which is good for all the family.
My reply to you is to say if what they have told you does not feel right, keep on at them till you feel they have got it right - your his mum and you do know him better than any Dr, Psychiatrist etc if your gut instinct is a retest go for it. Good Luck
