My 14 year old daughter's announcement

My daughter recently announced that she may be gay and that she is going out with her best friend. I am very supportive but I did have to have a word with her the other day when they were kissing in front of me and my other daughter. Was I wrong to tell her that it wasn't appropriate?

I think the same tact and respect needs to be taken no matter what kind of relationship it it (m/m, f/m, f/f).
I wouldn't want my daughter (or my son) making out with ANYONE in front of me. A quick peck hello or goodbye, something like that, okay, fine. But there's a line to any PDA and I think it needs to be respected, especially in front of your parents, no matter who you're in a relationship with.
Maybe use the example of what your daughter may not want to see you and your partner doing in front of her ( and dad (or boyfriend/partner/whatever) making out....GROSS!!) and let her know that you expect a certain amount of respect from her in front of you. Maybe lay out exactly what they would mean (keep it reasonable. Banning ALL physical contact in front of you would be kind of ridiculous). And make sure to stress that the rules would be the same regardless of boy or girl.

I'd be asking my daughter not to be kissing anyone in front of me boy or girl especially at 14, I also think that if my say 21 year old daughter came to me and told me she was gay although I would be supportive I would ask her to give me time to get use to the idea. I don't think you was wrong I just think your human.
And good on you for being supportive it's refreshing to hear!

Hi Beth, No - this is her first ever relationship. Maybe it's a hormone thing that she may grow out of and she has taken my comments on board as she thanked me for being honest with her tonight and apologised if she had offended me at all.

At 14 there would be no kissing in front of the family regardless of sexual orientation and there would also be no one on one dating (supervised group 'dating' may be ok) regardless of sexual orientation.

Look on the bright side... at least you won't have to worry about your 14/15 year old daughter telling you she's pregnant. Sorry, bad joke.

Has she always exhibited lesbian tendencies? Is she the butch or the girl in the relationship?

well yes,I think infront of your family , its a bit out loud and she should have some respect...she just told everyone and this will take some getting used to and since she is 14 and hormones are comming in she still needs to show respect to others ,that its not to cool to do this in front of family or others, same for anyone else theres a time and can show affection but do in a tactful way.....
