My 14 year old son is suffering from severe depression, doctor wants to put him on medication.

Our family doctor wants to put my 14 year old son on Prozac. I am very wary of prescription drugs, but he is so depressed he is not eating or sleeping. Depression runs in our family. I work in a Mental health facility so I see the effects of these drugs all the time. Any non judgmental advice or personal experience with this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I have seen depression and what it can do to people and also know of some who take the meds without any problem and they are adults but there are those adults that have a lot of trouble with the meds. I am surprised that a doctor wants to put a child under the age of 18 on meds for it because from all the ads I see on TV or hear on Radio about certain drugs for depression they are specific in saying that use in anyone under 18 is not suggested. For now, I would suggest taking your son to someone who can counsel him. A therapist might be the key here to help him rather than meds. Also ask the school counselor if there are programs in your area for kids with depression and even support groups. I would rather do that for my teen myself than for giving meds to him or her. Trust me its not worth the side effects of said drugs because some can cause all sort of things like suicidal thoughts, worse depression and other things that are major health concerns.
