My 16 year old son gets social anxiety... How can I get him to open up socially with his peers

You may want to get him to see a councellor. Social anxiety makes it so that every move he makes and every social situation he's in becomes a mini nightmare. He really should talk to a professional who can help him learn coping skills to deal with this.

Other than that I would try to get him into some programs. At 16 it's a bit harder but martial arts is great for self-esteem and he may find other guys he can hang around. Sometimes going to a 'youth group' on Friday or something can help him get to know some other people. Not sure what other interests he has but anything where he can go to a club/sport where he's interested in what's going on.
