Hi, my 5 year old son is telling everybody about things he did with his dad, but he does not know him. His father left when he was 3 months old and we never saw him again. I don't know if I should be worried or if it's just a phase that will pass. What am I to do?

Thank you for replying. I have tried talking to him, but not in the way you mentioned. Normally I try to make him understand these memories he has of his dad are not real. Two weeks ago he told my sister, in great detail, how his dad taught him to swim. He can't even swim. He will only be starting with his swimming lessons in summer. I will definitely take your advice and talk to him again.
Thank you.

Talk to him. Often times kids will make up stories when one parent is absent from their life. They miss that parent or the possibility of the interactions they would have with that parent. Sometimes hearing others talk about their dad and things they do with their dad makes him feel left out or wish he could have those experiences also. Talk to him about that. Find out what he misses or wishes he could do with his dad. You don't necessarily have to "fix" it just listen.....sometimes all they need is to be able to voice their grief in that loss.
