My 7yr old daughter has been a finger and toe nail chewer since infancy. We can't get her to stop.

Has anyone else had to deal with this. She doesn't like that she does it, we've even been taking her manicures to try and help and coax her to stop. She says she doesn't kno why or even realize when she does it. She has been doing this nail chewing since about 10 months old, and we have no idea what to do. Her fingers and toes are a mess, with even a little torn skin around the wuick of the nails. Please share any strategies that have worked for you!

If you're stateside go to Sally Beauty Supply and get No Bite! nail polish. It's clear with a matte finish so it doesn't look like she's wearing nail polish. It has the most vile taste to it. I used it as an adult to stop nail biting and IT WORKS. Great for boys and men, too. Works *under* nail polish!

Must admit I'm 44 and use to bite my nails that bad they got infected had to have injections between my fingers! But, when I'm stressful , I love to bite them nails off! Xx

Yes I have been so scared to tell anyone, my 9 year old daughter chews her toe nails and her fingers, and can't be trusted still alone due to her putting things in her mouth!
I blame me the mother because I gave her a dummy, then had to remove it due to her speech and social activities. Her pencil case is like fire wood!! All her pencils and pens are like dried up chewing gum! Xx HELP xx

Like Robyn suggested, there are certain products that you paint onto your nails. They have a very bitter taste and will deter chewing. One strategy my older sister used on her neice was to promise to paint her nails every week if Abigail didn't chew them. It's worked for a couple years now.

Often children with a more nervous disposition bite their nails so consider if this is the case and try dealling with this. If not the case there are some brush on products normally available from a pharmist which you paint on like nail polish and it has a horrible taste. However I have not hear of much success until the child is in their teens and is able to take some personal care of their nails with different polishes etc.

Try putting tobasco sauce on her nails, that is what my parents did with me. Also if you have the means you could try hypnosis, that really works.
