My 9 year old told last night that she is bisexual

My daughter told me last night that she is bisexual. I asked her if she knew what that means. She said she feels attracted to both girls and boys. She wanted reassurance that I wasn't mad at her. Of course I hugged her and told her I love her more than anything and that I am not mad. I also told her that she is only 9 years old and that is not like she has to make a decision on life . She should concentrate in school having friends and enjoying her childhood. Life could be do confusing at times but that she can always come to me and talk. I feel like there was more to be said, but the words were not coming out. I just wanted her to feel reassured and know that she is loved no matter what.

There is nothing more you should do then what you have already done. Kids need reassurance and to know the door is always open to talk about anything. You are correct that at 9, she is not likely 100% sure of her sexuality. Some kids are, but often I think they mistake the strong affection for a same gender friend for attraction.

I really think kids are exposed to so many things that that is confusing them and they do not understand even at this age what that really means. They hear it somewhere or from others in their age group and do not fully comprehend what it is about. You have done all that is necessary at this point. Love your child unconditionally. Explain things at her age in what is appropriate for her to hear.

At that age sexual orientation swings both ways his kids off and mistake friendship for infatuation or attraction. If she is bi that's wonderful if she isn't that's wonderful too know matter what she is it is wonderful.
