My baby is a TV addict!

[deleted account] ( 12 moms have responded )

My 11 month old baby LOVES the television! I feel like I am creating a monster, but then I have so many people that say "hey, take advantage of it while you can!" Any thoughts on this? She only watches the "BabyFirst" Channel, Care Bears, and Blues Clues, but I swear!- she is an ADDICT! I try books, blocks, toys, everything. Any thoughts on this?

At that age, you should just keep it off. But, if you do want to allow some programs, the slow-paced, educational sort are the absolute best. Blues Clues is a good one. Here's a great TED talk about kids and TV:

I found it to be very informative and it helped me make a lot of decisions about my son's TV time (my son is 4).

Shes an addict because of the changing colors and movement.

limit it even if she throws a fuss

TV cultivates passive learning. You want her to be a participant in learning, not a spectator. Engage her face to face. I promise you she will be more interested in time with her mommy than a glowing screen.

Please be careful with the use of the TV. It isn't a healthy habit, at any age. It encourages kids to be sedentary and need to be entertained every minute. It produces a 5 second attention span (which their school teachers will tell you is a big problem when it comes to learning). And, even worse, early TV watching has been shown to have an addicting quality for kids susceptible to Autism, and to greatly worsen the severity of Autism.

Use classical music or movie soundtracks (without words) at this age. It is so much better, even though you can't use it as a baby sitter. Protect your young ones, because at this age, they are completely dependent on you.

Turn the TV off. Just have it on for certain times during the day.

That's a tough one, my kid loves it too but I don't want her to get addicted like I am.

LOL!! My 10 (almost 11 month old) is the exact same way, with Disney Jr! Once Mickey Mouse is on he is standing at the tv stand just staring up at the TV and same with the other shows, you could always just turn off the tv but I know it's hard cuz then it makes the house quiet. lol good luck and don't be too worried :0

Now is a great time to introduce her to other good music. Also, to establish interaction with her. There are lots of studies the demonstrate the adverse impact of television and video games, etc, on the ability of the young to interàct with other folks and their environment. Use television as a family activity that you share together, NOT as a babysitter.

I agree, control the amount she watches also buy some of the DVD that way you can control what she watches at 2 month my son love mickey mouse if he was having a crying fit and didn't need to be nurse, mickey mouse stop him just the songs like the MICKEY, now he almost two he only watches mickey after bath, before bed we have 6 dvd of mickey and we rotate them. I also suggest baby signing time DVD that way your daughter can learn to communicate before she can talk, we tried to teach my son at 6 months but would never look at us, now because of baby signing time he looks at us and sign or talks what he want such as help with his stacking cubs usually with a please before or after help.
