My baby is constipated, what can I do.

My baby is 4 weeks old and he gets constipated very badly. I could not breast feed I did not produce enough milk do we did formula. The doctor says the formula is what is causing the constipation but said she did not want to change it for me to check his temp. Rectally but it happens more often. Can I give him a little watered down apple juice or prune juice?
