my doctor told me that when a baby drinks milk or formula it instantly curdles in their tummys because of tummy acid. she said this is perfectley normal :]

It could be a number of things: too much at one feeding, acid reflux, or an allergy to the formula. My son had acid reflux really bad about that age. We told his pediatrician at his next appointment and he had us switch to soy based milk, he spit it up too! So he told us to use a formula with rice added or add the rice to it ourselves (one scoop of rice for every two scoops of formula), that helped out a ton! He also prescribed some meds the first time but I didn't feel like it was necessary at the time. I wanted to wait and see what the source of the problem was. It was rough at first, we had relatives that wouldn't even hold him cuz of it, lol!

Good Luck!

My granddaughter had this problem and it was acid reflux due to a problem in her throat. Does she seem to be in distress? If it is painful to her then tell your pediatrician.

as a former pediatric nurse i would say that even if it seems harmless, if ur concerned go with ur gut instinct and take him in to see his pediatrician. it could be something as simple as reflux or a milk allergy to something more severe like ulcers so i would say the only way to truely put ur mind at ease is to see the pediatrician.

My daughter did the same thing and I took her to the doc and he didnt tell me anything that I didnt already know so I found it a waste of money and time......I would suggest monitoring her intake of milk to make sure your not over feeding her , like call your doc and ask how much your baby should be drinking at her age and then make sure that is all you give her and also make sure all the burps are out of her by burping her an extra 10-15 mins more than usual so that all the air bubbles are out. I hope this advice will help and your little ones' tummy is back to normal soon :)

Thanks so much everyone for ur help. My baby is 3 months old and eats 4oz of formula every two hours during the day and i breastfeed her during the night. She only tends to spit up during the day. I'm gonna try giving her a little less and see if that help, if it doesn't i will have to take her to the dr.'s just to be safe.

Totally normal!!!! When mine did it I was worried too. You have to remember that is ALL they are eating, so when they spit up, it's kind of been there awhile.

me son about 3 days a week, he would just have spit up days,, when he spit up alot,,,, but he is six months now and barley spits up even a little ,,,,, but yes milk usually curdals and will be sour smelling when it comes back out,,,,,, if your baby is doing it ver frequent and is a larg amount of spit up in one time,, your baby could be having acid reflux or could be lactose intollerant???? but your baby could be fine,,, so its up to you to take them to the dr or not

It could be normal but maybe see a pediatrician to put your heart at ease. If your baby is under 1, is vomiting a lot and has acidic could be a bit of reflux. It's common in young babies because of their little tummies that can't keep the milk down. But anyway that's just a theory based on my daughter's experience withe reflux.
