My kids HATE having their nails cut.... HELP!!

What's the best, most productive way to cut children's nails?? When my son was a baby, he could handle it with no problems and was fine. He's 3 now and we have to practically hold him down to cut his nails. Now he's older and getting to be very strong! Our daughter is 5 months and HATES having her nails cut.... needless to say, none of us look forward to nail cutting time! It's heartbreaking to watch my son as upset as he is.... I think he might think his skin is gonna get cut or something. Any suggestions??

Hi everyone these comments on nail cutting has helped me alot because my son wont let me cut his nails or toenails at all! He has a huge tantrum and i end up stopping because hes so upset plus he wont keep still afraid of accidently cutting his skin :'( so i will try it when hes asleep see how i go! Thanks to all mums here i love the advice on here.

We cut our little boys nails when he is sleeping, he just wont hold his hand still when he is awake and i would hate to cut him.

Hope this helps x

my son is two, and it can go either way with him lol, if i'm doing my nails he'll want his done too, so that's pretty easy.

other times i've had to basicly sit on him :S (for those lovely hangnails and chipped toenails from stubbed toes)

i did try doing it while he was sleeping, but he would always wake up!  silly boy lol

but i agree, doing it after they have had a bath makes the nail easier to cut.

My best time is cutting them while he's in his car seat. He's almost 4 but it holds him in place better than having me or dad try to hold him down. I place a towel or blanket on his lap and let him know we aren't doing ______ (fill in activity) until this is over. It helps if you have reached the destination and he wants to get out.

Both of my boys hated getting their nails cut too. The 5 year old is fine now and the 2 year old has improved a lot. I have found that watching you cut your nails gets them interested (this worked best for my youngest) and they want to get theirs done too. Also distractions such has big brother or Daddy hamming it up/puppets. If there's a movie/tv show that they really like that will help too. Still occasionally we have to resort to holding the youngest, which I hate, but he scratches his face otherwise. I hope maybe one of these will help - good luck!

I don't know about your older child, but I do my son's nails when he gets all relaxed and sleepy while he's nursing. I am afraid of cutting his skin, so as an extra precaution, I use a nail file instead. It takes longer, but I've cut him once already and don't want to risk doing it again.

I did alot of that kind of stuff (nail cutting & sliver removal) while my son was sleeping.

well my daughter will do anything if I sing to her while I do it LOL but also I will cut my nails and look all amazed like its the coolest thing I have ever done and if that still won't work I wait till after her bath I put her on the changing table and hope for the best Good Luck
