My son has behavioural issues and lacks empathy

Hello Im Alex

My son is 9 years old.He is very behind in all subjects. He is also has behavioural issues. We are often called to the school as he has hurt another child or has damaged somebody's possessions. He has no empathy and no matter what punishments we give him they have no effect on him.

We have seen the school psychologist who only looks at his school work, we have been to the GP. He has seen the Community Child Health Department. They all say they can see that there is something but they cant say what.

Its not that we want a diagnosis(although that would help), we just want to know how to help him and reach him in a way we can understand. In school he is just being punished for being naughty. We are concerned for him and his future.

Is there anyone else who has a child similar to this who can offer us some guidance.

Hi Krista,
Its nice to have advise from another mum, the website you gave was helpful too, hes not quite as bad as they mention but im definitely going to look into the conduct and defiant disorders as he may have a milder form of them.

I would go back to your GP and say that you want him to see a child psychiatrist and that you're not taking no for an answer. The lack of empathy is a large red flag, and needs to be looked at. It could be anything from autism to narcissistic personality disorder. But don't stop until you get some answers -- you need to have your child seen by an EXPERT.

You say you don't want a diagnosis, but frankly, you need one. That's the only way to know exactly what is going on with Alex, so that he can receive the proper support and therapy and hopefully become a functional little boy again.

Unfortunately most likely no one will diagnois him they hate labeling children too young. I wish I could be of more help but I can't have the doctors suggested anything that might help?
