Children go through so many different stages, so it is totally normal. Often clinginess comes from increased autonomy - once they have the ability to wander off or to realize the danger of being all alone.

At 17 months, I would probably make an effort to offer him more attention and reassurance, but I would discourage you from staying with him for nap times and carrying him all the time. At this age, you cannot give him everything he wants.

I remember a period where my daughter would always stand up in her crib and cry after I had rocked her and lied her down. I would blow her a kiss and tell her I love her with a smile, then close the door and the crying rarely continued longer than 30 seconds.

I can't remember when it started with my boys exactly, but it sounds like separation anxiety. They are fine now as they are 2.5 and 4.
