Get a humidifier in his room also to help move the mucous. It sounds like that is exactly what it is, mucous from a cold. The mucous can last 2 weeks after a cold for kids.

If he's been seen by a doc and they are saying it's due to mucus, then I would put him on his side to sleep and elevate the head of his basinette or crib and keep a close watch on him. If he's laying flat then the mucus settles and can't drain down and out...elevating his head will help with that.
