Please help me get an almost 2 year old off his night time bottle

Johns biggest comfort is his bottle - must have milk in it.
in the evening he has dinner, a bath and we put him to bed. we have tried so many times to give him a plain water bottle or to replace with a soother/dummy. he doesnt accept it. we have left him to see if he'll settle and he wont.
i dont have a prob with him using a bottle as a comfort item - its an orthodontic nuk wide neck so im not worried about his oral development - looking great so far.
the problem is that he keeps rolling over onto his bottle or not putting it down correctly and then ends up leaking a half a bottle or more of milk all over the bed and himself. its winter now and i cant wash his matrass and bedding and have it dry by the end of the day like before...
if i give him a small bottle - he isnt satisfied and will spend hours demanding a full bottle to fall asleep with.
if he wakes in the night and cant find his bottle/it is empty - he will wake me for another...

please help! baby #2 will be here in 3 months!!

The longer you let him have it the more attached he will be to it. I would just take it away and suffer for a the week. until he realizes you aren't going to give in to him. Your the boss, not him. Better for children to learn this early on before they get older. Forget the soother, its still another object you will have to break him of.

My son is 4 and he still likes milk at night. I had to completely get rid of the bottle and only let him have leak proof cups during the day. It was hard. My son has perfectly healthy teeth so the milk is not harming him on that level. But he did want less milk once he got use to the big boy cups. I let him have a cup before he goes to bed and he wants another cup first thing when he wakes up.
