I was diagnosed with a short cervix at 26 weeks. I stayed in the hospital 3 days and received steroid shots. I'm now 30 weeks 6 days and my doctor expects my water to break with in a couple of weeks. I'm scared. What should I expect?

When your water breaks, if the baby is tolerating labor you can anticipate a vaginal delivery. Plan on only having your spouse in the room and don't be scared if they have you deliver in the OR just in case. Your doctor will be there and your nurse, as well as a neonatologist, a respiratory therapist and another nurse from the NICU for the baby. When baby comes, you may not hear her cry right away and this is normal even with a term baby. They will probably hold baby up for you to see, cut the cord and take her to a warmer for an assessment. You may hear suctioning, the baby crying and it may seem like they are handling baby roughly but it is all part of stimulating the baby. He/she will be foot-printed and weighed and if she is breathing on her own you will be able to hold her. Since you are nearly 31 weeks and you may go 33-34, you can expect baby to be small. No one can predict if there will be complications but you are pretty far along that I'd think he/she will be in pretty good shape. Once baby can gain weight, breathe without support and maintain body temp; you can go home.
I hope that helps! good luck!
