10 is way too old to be spanked at all. And spanking any aged child w/ an object is abuse and 100% unacceptable.
If you can not reason w/ a 10 year old and remove privileges instead of resorting to violence I recommend parenting classes and therapy.

Robby, if spanking with your hand on their butt over clothes no longer has a desired effect, then spanking doesn't work and you should find a different method of discipline that doesn't involve abuse. Once you start using tools or go bare bottom, that is going into the realm of abuse. If you're leaving bruises, welts, or any marks, then that is abuse. You should have rules and consequences, but your consequences need to be appropriate for their age, appropriate for the "crime", and something that the child responds to in order to change their behavior. A quick swat on a toddler's butt may get their attention and make them mind you. Tweens-teens are too old for that maneuver. Learn how to be a better parent instead of hitting your child.
