Red swollen thumb from sucking at bed-time.

Hi, my daughter of 14 months only sucks her thumb when she goes to sleep (since she was a couple months old), but it is now red and swollen. It has two little areas (apparently where her teeth are) that are open sores. It is dry and plain gross. I had a family member suggest apple-bitter or hot sauce, but then someone said if it is such a comfort to them, they will wipe it off as much as possible and suck it until it tastes better! Another suggests taping a glove to her hand. She is a wonderful child when it comes to bed-time. We lay her down, she grabs her blankey and goes to sleep. There is no fighting or crying time. She goes down very well. It's after we put her to bed that she starts. And she doesn't suck her thumb any other time of the day. The doctor says let it slide, not to worry unless it becomes infected. I'm unsure. :) Thanks to anyone with advice!

I have the same issue but my daughter is only 11 months old and she hasn't been sleeping well because of it. My aunt remembers very vividly being tied down when she was very little and having her 2 fingers cut to drain the infection from sucking on them. She helped me wrap and tape my daughter's thumb yesterday in hopes to prevent the same tramma on her. We also used neosporin to help treat it. I see this post was done a few years ago, please let me know how it worked out for you guys.
