the doctor told me to start feedeing my 4 month old rice or oatmeal cereal because he's now a formula fed baby. I am shocked! I didn't think he was suppose to eat solids until at least 6 months. Is he really ready?

My doctor recommended starting rice cereal at 4 months due to a reflux problem, and I thought the same as you that you shouldn't start until 6 months. The doctor also told me that he was from the US and they introduce solids as early as 4 months. As long as your son is showing signs of wanting to eat and can sit up I don't see a problem with it. And I didn't mean to click "encouraging"

Is your child underweight? That's the only reason I can think of as to why he might want to start your son on solids early -- but it really should have nothing to do with whether he's on formula or not. Odd.

I started feeding my son rice cereal at 4 months. It's really based upon their weight and how much formula they are drinking. Some babies may be smaller and fill up on a smaller amount. My son was 4 months and drinking 8 ounce bottles. The pediatrician didn't want me to give him a larger bottle than that so he was definitely ready for solids. I would start with rice cereal because it is very gentle on the tummy and easy to digest. I waited until my son was 6 months before introducing the other cereals. He was eating fruits and vegetables at 5 months.

My son started rice cereal at 4 months (with agreement from dr). i gave him four weeks on the rice cereal and then started introducing the veggies/fruit at 5 months. Babies are like adults, they're all different and ready at different ages. If you don't feel like he's ready then you don't have to start him yet. However, if he can sit up in the high chair without falling over and has lost his tonge thrust reflex then he most likely is ready. On the same note, all drs are different in their recommendations as well - my dr told me 4 months, however, my best friend's dr told her not to start anything until a minimum of 9 months....
