My daughter has a rough rash all over her body. It is light pink and feels like sandpaper. It sounds like scarlett fever, but she hasnt had any other symptoms and the rash is not dark. Her skin feels so dry like it is going to peel. The doctor said it is dry skin but Im not buying it. It appeared out of no where and I already use extra lotion on her. Any advice on what this sandpaper rash could be from?? THank you!

It sounds like an allergy to either food or something she's exposed to (detergent, perfumes, soap). They can appear suddenly. Dry skin does not appear as a rash. Some viral infections also appear that way. I'd bring her to the doctor and request they run labs (CBC to see what her white blood cell count is - normal would mean more allergy related, high would be bacterial infection, low would be viral infection). If it's not an infection, request an antihistamine until it's controlled and find the cause quickly.

Hi Lindsay,
Unfortunately they never gave me a good explanation but soon after this post it went away. It's been a while and she hasn't had anything similar since. Hopefully your little one's rash goes away soon.

Thank you ladies for all your advice on the sandpaper rash! I did take her to the doctor, he is the one who said dry skin (but Im not buying it). She hasnt eaten anything new and we didnt change detergents. It has been a week now and the sandpaper rash is still there. I have to take my other daughter for a checkup tomorrow so I will ask again. I have a feeling we will be changing doctors soon. :)

Make sure and note what she ate recently. Eczema like symptoms can cause the skin to break out. Did the doctor actually see her and the sandpaper rash or did you just talk over the phone. I'd take her to an appointment or Urgent Care (non-ER), but I don't think it's an emergency. Try the lotion, so you can tell the physicians what you have done and any new foods you may have given her. Also, did you try a new laundry detergent? Good luck.
