I don't know if this has been a previous topic, but my husband and I are expecting (my first) and we are contemplating saving the baby's cord blood. We aren't really sure what to expect if we do this, and I was just wondering if any of you other Moms have save the cord blood. If so what are your thoughts.
Thank you,
Jackie

LIke Kate said, it's super expensive to bank your cord blood. However, it's free to donate it and there are a lot of places that take the donation. Like Katherine said, there's a national bank and there's also a lot of independent scientific studies that need it as well. Of course, you need to do your research with the independent ones (to make sure they're legit and such) wheras the national bank is very safe.
We donataed to cord blood and placentas to a local college (we live near a university with a great cancer research center) for their scientific studies. My mentor died of uterine cancer, and the university has a specific study for that kind of cancer, so that's where the cord blood and placentas went - in memory of my mentor and in celebration of my children :)

You can now donate it to a national cord bank, where anyone including yourself can use it. It's free too.

It's really expensive. We're donating the cord blood when our son is born in February. I figure it should go to SOME use even if I can't afford to bank it myself. :)
