Selective Mutism- does my son suffer from it?

i recently learnt of a condition called selective mutism. I'm not sure what exactly it is but some websites describe it as a psychological disorder, which seems a bit extreme.
my 3 year old boy is a very happy child especially at home in an familiar environment, with his cousins and those friends that he knows. But when he gets to town or where there are a lot of people, he becomes extremely withdrawn, it's painful. He fiddles with his ear and clings onto mummy. I worry because he seems to have an inordinate fear of people, noise, etc. he is even afraid of playing on these big toys like moving cars and i feel like he will lose out on his life.
has any mother gone through such and am I overreacting? will he change and become less sensitive with time?

If you are overly concerned then you really should see your doctor. We can't "diagnose" over the internet.
That being said he may just be shy. Not knowing your child we have no idea but getting him help earlier rather than later is the best. He will be going to school soon so it needs to be addressed if there is an underlying condition.
