Should I put my 13 year old on anti-depression meds?

Hi moms! I just joined this site and have so many questions! Hoping you ladies can help steer me in the right direction.

My 13 year old son has struggled with depression for awhile. His bio dad walked out on us several years ago and my son was old enough to remember it. Though I've been married to my wonderful husband for years, my son still struggles with his relationship with his step-dad. I won't go into all the other issues he's dealing with, but suffice it to say, he is dealing with heavy stuff and it wears on him. He's seen a therapist, and has been to counseling at school, he's busy with sports and activities and we've tried a number of exercises suggested by the therapist. Nothing is working.

Do you have any experience with putting children on anti-depressants? Recommended brands, side effects, etc? Any help would be much appreciated.

You need to be very careful when medicating kids who are under 18 on depression medications because for one thing they are not reccommended for them. They have a lot of side affects that can deter growth, make the depression worse, cause suicide like thoughts, and other major things. That is why a kid under age 18 is not recommended to have them. You need to seek the advice of a doctor though in this. We are not doctors here but I would not place my own child on those meds unless it was the last resort.
