sippy cup troubles

My LO is 14 months, we are trying to switch him over to a sippy cup from a bottle with minimal success. I'm haven't pushed the issue in the past because I figured he would start using one when he wants. But now he has broken all the bottle tops that go with his bottles, from hitting them into things or repeatedly dropping them on the ground. I'm not going to buy more so that he can break them. I have several types of sippy cups, trainers, straws, etc. So far he just won't take it, only when he is SOOOO thirsty that he can't go for any longer. Then he will drink a couple times and then start spitting out the liquid. I don't want him to go with out liquids are there any suggestions about types of sippy cups or strategies to help him drink from one so that he isn't going without drinking all day? Thank so much :)

Does he like to share your drinks? Once he gets the hang of drinking from a cup you shouldnt have a problem.......the other thing you could try is to take him to the shops and let him choose a special sippy cup for his drinks, then refer to it as his special cup. I guarantee you he wont allow himself to just not drink. The most difficult time is when you are out at playgroup or friends places that also have little ones on a bottle...............but persevere and good luck

The first sippy cup we used with my son had a soft top that was comparable to a bottle nipple, just a different shape. He was bottle broken by the time he was 10 months old. We started the cup slowly, at first we only gave it to him at dinner and as he got used to it used it more and more. We also had a set of bottles made by Avent that you can convert into sippy cups just by buying handles and sippy cup insert things and he liked those at first too because we could leave the handles off so it was like he was using a bottle.
