do you think this is abuse? Your opinions please

I think it depends on what you mean by *around*. Do you mean having a cigarette inside the house or car, or do you mean having a cigarette over near the park bench while your kids are having a play on the playground?

I believe the former borders on abuse. Exposing your child directly to cigarette smoke indoors (any form of indoors) is passive smoking, and enough studies have been done on that to prove its hazards, and the impact it can have on children. Where I live it is illegal to smoke in the car with a child, and it absolutely should be.

But smoking *around* your kids? No, it isn't abuse. Some instances are irresponsible, but I wouldn't say abusive.

Totally. If not abuse... as least neglecting their physical well being. Of course, I AM allergic and highly sensitive, so I have extreme negative opinions about any and all cigarette smoke.

I could drive behind a normal car's car exhaust all day w/ zero issues, but if the car in front of me has a smoker w/ their windows open.... w/in 10-15 seconds I'm coughing and choking so bad that I almost puke! And that's from a good distance away! Granted, a lot of kids wouldn't be as sensitive as I am, but I can just imagine what it is doing to their young lungs. :(

i don't think its abuse but i do think its wrong i have two boys and i'm a smoker i know what its like to grow up around smokers and i know that's a big part of why i smoke yes i have tried to quit multiple times and hope to try again soon both me and my hubby smoke but we never smoke in the car or our home but our kids have seen use smoke and it bothers us alot so we tell them all the time that its bad and keep trying to quit for them i don't want my kids to smoke and i will do anything to try to keep it from happening

Yeah, not really abuse, per se. But it's definitely detrimental to their well-being, and is a pretty crappy parenting choice.

I am a smoker, I would'nt call it abuse, how ever I would think it would be unfair to expose children to these health risk.

i gues i agree withJodi but its just borderline to their physical health, but I think Hollie J meant if a parent continues to smoke around children in their home , car etc..

dont think its abuse but its borderline IMO, I dont smoke by all means, but not every one is like me. I personally can't stand the smell of smoke, I feel awful for children that do smoke in the home w/ kids though. thats all

I wouldn't call it abuse but I do call it stupid. There is nothing good about smoking. As adults we have a choice if we smoke or not- the children around us do not. We are responsible for their safety- why take the chance?

Yeah I do. Maybe not as extreme as bashing them, but it's still mistreating them. They're not old enough to give their consent, and as adults we're responsible for their wellbeing. It's proven to be bad for everyone, but especially for children, so it's just irresponsible to subject them to it.
