son being picked on.

I know thus is for moms but I am dad who loves is son and is having a real hard time him being picked on and bullied. I am sure it hurts me more than him. I have my son only on weekends and I live about 45 minutes from him and his school so I don't have the everyday integration with him. On weekends we hang out and do things but almost every weekend he tells me a new story about being picked on or called names. It brings me to tears at night because I don't want him to be one of those children that commit suicide because they are bullied. How can I help him to make this stop?

Keep showing your child what appropriate behavior looks like. With my children I tell them Look how I behave Look how I speak.... I remind them that someone is teaching them how to behave. I also taught my daughter to stand her ground and speak up. For her to say loudly that is not okay for you to say that to me. It works because it stops the other child to focus and call the attention to the teacher or adult that is present. Teaching a child to be strong even when they are scared can go along way :)

Teach him resilience. Teach him that it doesn't matter what others think of him. Make sure that YOU love him just the way he is and don't criticise him too often. Give him praise for the positive things. Teach him that nobody is perfect and we all have our faults. Teach him to love those things about himself that the other kids seem to pick on him about. Make sure he feels special and loved.

It seems you already have a great relationship with him, so model truly positive and resilient behaviour. Kids who have resilience fare much better in the world. When bullies see resilience and lack of care about their taunts, they tend to stop because they don't get the reaction they are after.
