Son with ADHD - coping skills

I am the mother of a 10 year old son with ADHD and a LD. I am at a loss of where to turn at this point, as the beginning of Grade 5 approaches next week. I have had numerous interviews with my son's teachers, have had him assessed twice (once in Grade 1 and again in January of this year) by a psychologist who diagnosed him with ADHD in Grade 1. My husband and I have been to parenting classes and our son has been on a variety of medications for ADHD since Grade 2, the results of which I am completely unhappy with. With meds being appetite suppressants and causing insomnia in my young son, I am looking for any advice on where to turn at this point for both my son and I to fine tune our coping skills so we can avoid medication and try to live a peaceful life. Also, am interested in the government disability funding for kids with ADHD....has anyone applied and been successful? Has anyone had any difficulties with same?

Thanks for your assistance.
