split stomach muscles after pregnancy?

I had an emergency section 3 weeks ago and really hoped to be back on my feet by now, but am still resting. When I was in hospital, the physiotherapist had a feel of my stomach and said that my stomach muscles had separated. I thought nothing of it, id just had a baby and assumed it would fix itself. Three weeks on, my belly still looks like I'm 4 or 5 months pregnant (I usually have a flat stomach and fairly good stomach muscles) and I just feel so unattractive. With a baby now it is hardly at the front of my mind, but I was googling stomach exercises to help and noticed that split stomach muscles is actually fairly serious and bad for you, especially causing chronic back pain in later life. Has anyone had any experience of this? I don't know of I am getting worked up over nothing. Thank you!

Most people who have this don't have chronic back pain. A lot of moms don't even know they've got abdominal separation. Surgery can be done to correct it, but only in severe cases. And surgery is rare even though separated muscles are common.

Our oldest wasn't quite five and a half when our fourth was born, and I had two miscarriages right before second trimester started - so our kids are really close together, and for a period of about six years I was perpetually pregnant. My normal weight is about 115lbs, and all of our kids were between 8 and 9 pounds when they were born. By the time our fourth arrived my separation was pretty severe. It was more than five fingers.

Our youngest is nearly five now my separation is mild (probably one finger, it's been ages since I've checked). I didn't do anything to get rid of, but I'm active and carried all of our kids in baby carriers (which helped). I definitely could have gotten rid of it sooner if It's worked at it.

Wearing something like a Belly Bandit helps because it reminds you to stand up straight and keep your stomach muscles engaged.

If you haven't seen it yet, there is a book called "Lose Your Mummy Tummy" by Julie Tupler. It gets good reviews overall, but the people who hate it really hate it.
