Starting cereal and food

My baby is 4 months old at our last doctor's appt. he said it was okay to start solids between now and 6 months although he provided no guidelines.

Right now he is strickly breastfed. So how do you add the solids in the mix? He said to start with rice cereal and veggies and fruits.

My question is when? how much? Dooes he still need to breastfeed just prior to or after the solids? and anything else I need to konw!

Thanks for the help!

I was formula feeding so i dont know if it is any different, but this is what we did. We gave our little girl rice cereal for breakfast mixed with formula, but off a spoon not out of the bottle. you can also mix breast milk with it. When she got used to eating we introduced the fruits and vegies after about 3 weeks. She is now 7 months old and basically eating what we eat.In the last fortnight, things i can remember that we have had are, apricot chicken, roast with roast veg, pork on the bbq, lamb loin chops and veg, meatloaf and chicken fettuccine. She loves it all. Below is what she is eating now and was doing so by 6-6.5 months

For breakfast she usually has:

farex, weet bix, toast or scrambled eggs

Lunch is fruit:

kiwi fruit, water melon, rock melon, apples, pears, banana, nectrines, oranges, mangos and avacados.

Dinner veg include:

sweet potato, potatoe, pumpkin, squash, beans, peas, spinach, broccoli, cauilflower, chokos, zucchini and carrots.

I only puree (magic bullet) the meats and apples and pears as she doesnt like them cooked (apples and pears i do cook her meat lol.) The rest i just mash with either a fork or potato masher.

hope that helps a bit.
