Steam Vaporizers, do they help with coughing during the night?

I have two children who spend most of winter with a cough, we are using chest rub, sitting them up when it gets bad, would a vaporizer help? we need sleep again....

Yes. My daughter gets a seasonal cough - it is basically asthma. She is 5. Every night, we put the vaporiser on for her and it really eases her sleep (together with rubbing vapo-rub on her chest and a puff of her ventolin at bedtime). The nights we forget to use it are the nights she is worse, so I swear by it :)

the vicks vapor really works well if you put it on their feet with socks! It even helped for me when i had a bad cough.

You should be able to buy tablets to place in it each night which keep it clean and free of bacteria :)

if their cough is dry or tight it may help but be sure to use a cool mist vaporizer and wash it out daily or you may fill the room with what ever begins to grow in the water. also use a vaporizer with a humistat so you don't over saturate the room with dampness. this could cause mold to grow.the vaporizer will not stop the cough but will keep the mucous loose so it can be coughed up.have you had them checked for allergies if they cough a good part of the winter?

When my daughters have a cough I put the de-humidifier in their bedroom and put a couple of drops of olbas oil, or similar, in the de-humidifier itself. The de-humidifier takes the dryness out of the air and the olbas oil aids their breathing. Also, rather than give them an extra pillow under their head, put something under the mattress to raise that slightly at one end, creating a slope that they can lay flat on rather than lift their neck too high.

yes, definitely a good investment. Doesnt have to be a really expensive one either

They can. Two things though: don't use the hot steam for safety reasons. It can burn you, or worse, the kids if they get to it. I got burned as a kid on the one my gramma had. Also, keep it VERY clean, they can breed bacteria, including legionaires.

Thanks everyone, I bought a vicks vaporiser, and I do think it helps with the coughing, I spent 1 night in the room with my son using it and I found I woke up with a clearer throat in the morning. The coughing has reduced significantly(we still dont get all the way thruogh the night-and it did set off the smoke detector a few times)

A vaporizer helps my daughter who is 20 months old . They also ahve Vicks Plug ins for outlets. Just be aware and this is something I didnt know that chest rub has been proven not safe to put directly on skin for children under 2 yo. I did this with my son years ago and he is fine but anyway with Ocean I rub it on her Pj's at nighttime along with the vaporizer. Also avoiding milk products b4 bed may help as well as milk tends to thicken the mucus.

Hi Katie, definitely! My little one has a cough a lot of the time - has nasal drip. I would recommend elevating the end of the bed as it helps the nasal drip and congestion and eases the cough a little. Try the chest rub on their feet with socks (an old wives tale but has helped my little one). My little one is too young to diagnose with asthma (but with a family history i'm crossing my fingers) but when he gets bad a little ventolin before he goes to bed helps. I would recommend though making sure you open up the curtains and windows during the day to ensure it kills any mould that loves the steam the vapourisers create - after 2 days of forgetting I found my little one's room covered above where the vapouriser was!! Good luck you poor thing - I know what you are going through, i've just got some herbal tablets to help me sleep again now my little one is better!!!

My son had a cough for a few days and i used the vapor on his chest and all that but it wasn't until i got the vaporizer yesterday that his cough eased. thats the best sleep he's had in 3 nights. SO I say go for it!
