Struggling w sleep schedule...

My 5 month old is really fighting bed time- for both naps and night. Sometimes I'm able to nurse him down, but often he finishes nursing and still isn't out- at which point we really struggle. He's so active! I try to sooth him in every way I can think of but he fights it like crazy. Im trying to get him on a regular schedule because I think it might help him, but he's so inconsistent; often he naps for 45 mins but every once and awhile he'll sleep for two hours, which is great, but totally throws off any attempt at a regular routine. I've tried the EASY method (eat, activity, sleep, you) but I can't seem to calm him very well, we often end up spending over an hour trying different things before he finally goes down.. Ideas???

I canned the EASY method after 2 or 3 months with both my kids. Once they were more established at eating, it didn't really make sense for me. I spent a day or two of observing when they naturally got tired, hungry, napped, etc. Then I 'tweaked' it a little. It ended up being something like this for both boys: wake up at 5:30 or 6 (when they were that young, now they sleep until seven), feed, play, nap at about 8:30 or 9 for about an hour and a half, repeat repeat repeat, bed about 7:30. Basically, feeding every 4 or so hours, nap every 3 hours. It took two or three days of some mild grumpies, but then they expected it. And things changed often, like when you start solids, or however often you feed them. Good luck to you!
