Teacher wants my son to repeat kindergarten...I feel like I failed him as a mom and as a teacher

My son is currently finishing up kindergarten. He is very smart and can tell you everything the teachers talks about in class and even comes home and does his own science experiments. He loves to be read to and loves books but he does not want to read on his own or write. The teacher wants him to repeat kindergarten because she feels that he is young and his problem is maturity. I really do not want him to repeat kindergarten but as a teacher myself, I can see he is behind in his reading and writing skills. I feel like I failed him as a mother and as a teacher.

You haven't failed him. If you're a teacher yourself, you know that not every kid is at the same maturity level at the same time. I'm sure he'll do fine if he repeats, and you may see your bright boy advance in leaps and bounds!

You haven't failed him. He sounds like a VERY bright little boy who may just need a little extra time w/ his reading and writing. If he is not ready to read or write on his own... sending him to first grade would just push him further and further behind. As a teacher I'm sure you know that reading and writing are two of the most important elements in education and keeping up w/ schoolwork. There are quite a few kids who repeat Kindergarten as they just need that extra year... and that's OK.

Do not feel that you failed with your son. Not all kids at the age of five are ready for school as far as maturity levels. They can do all the same things that the others do but they are not quite mature enough in other respects. It might not hurt him to stay behind and repeat the year once more but maybe have him placed with a different teacher.
