Teaching a toddler to ASK to go potty

My son is 33 months old. He will pee and poop in the toilet when I take him, but he does not ask on his own to go potty. He did at one time say he had to go pee more frequently, but now he will not go unless I make him go most times. Sometimes, he will respond affirmatively that he does need to poop or pee, but most times he says he doesn't want to go. I typically will take him every hour in accordance with his preschool schedule and 90% of the time he does something. When it comes to poop, he hides and that's how I know he's doing it. He will answer "yes" when asked if he's pooping and he will finish the job in the toilet.

Help, I really don't know how to teach him to ASK to go.

Tell him if he asks he get's something special. Like maybe a sticker, or M&M. I wouldn't give him more than one though. Maybe start a rewards chart with him? He's old enough to understand. I still have to remind my daughter who is 3.5, but when she has to go she goes.
