Teens and pot

Caught my son with a small amount of pot. He claims he just wanted to try it but never did. I'm sure, not. We punished him for a week and he couldn't get his driving permit. We have had many conversations about how the dangers of drugs. What have other Moms done?

I tested on y son on a random basis his entire senior year after he blew his savings on a girl and admitted to consuming marijuana.

He is clean to this day, you a year later.

I, myself have no problem with the substance, and do consume on occasion, but I am a 46 year old woman who has found some benefits to it. Not when I was 16, though...I did not consume until I was out of us, and on my own.

So far, your consequences are good 😀

I would have done a drug test. You can get them from a drug store, or you can go to your doctor and request one be done. Then you would know if he used or not. I am guessing he did and this may not be the first time. You chose a good consequence as I am sure he is anxious to get behind the wheel and now that is delayed. I'd let him know that you expect him to be honest, not use drugs and that you will have a drug test kit at home. Advise him that at any time, for any or no reason you may ask for a urine (or hair if you are really wanting a history) sample and if it is positive for pot or other drugs the consequences will be severe (you can be specific).
My kids all know that either I or one of their athletic coaches may request a drug test at any time. Having that "excuse" helps them tell peers "sorry I can't smoke pot, my parents drug test me" has helped my son one time. However, he was really glad to have a reason to say no. Ideally he would not need an excuse, but whatever works sometimes.
