Television wars :-)

At what age do you start letting your child watch TV? I know the AAP says 2 years, but my mother bought us these "educational" DVD's for my son, who is 2 months, and she keeps asking why we haven't watched them yet. How do I nicely say that we don't want to use her gifts yet?

My MIL bought my son a couple of Einstein tapes when he was about 4 months old. I just told her very honestly but nicely that we are not doing television for a few years. My son is 14 months and still doesn't watch TV. It helps that we don't watch much either and that the one set is in the basement. We also have friends who claim that we're depriving our child. We just ignore the comments.

Have you ever seen someone's TV on through their window at night, noticed how much 'flickering' there is? The scenes change at such a rapid rate and that flickering can be overstimulating to anyone, much less an infant's developing brain. (Flickering lights is a stimulation used to test for epilepsy). There are DVD's for infants that are basically just videos of other infants, the scenes don't change as rapidly and infants are more interested in faces than anything else anyways.

You can tell her that your son is not developmentally ready for the DVDs yet but look forward to using them when he's older.

its your decision. i dont think its really what age, but how much you let them watch the tv and what you let them watch. my son has been watching since he was a newborn. i read that they enjoy the color combinations of the screen before they can even make out what it is. at that age we watched cartoons at five in the morning for about a half an hour. now at five when we watch shows i ask him questions about them. test his comprehension, his predicting skills, his storytelling ability.
