I decided not to use Mirena, but am using a copper IUD. I'm happy with it. Slightly uncomfortable to in, but it's no biggie after labor. There are no drugs in the copper IUD. The only side effects that I have/had are a bit more discharge everyday, and the first 2 periods I had (which came after I had stopped breastfeeding) were extremely heavy and painful. The third month was ok and the flows have been much lower a year later. I will be taking it out soon to work on baby number 2. Taking it out is not covered by insurance unless it's 5/10 years (depending on expiration date) later.

[deleted account]

I have had one for years and am 2 months off having my third one in. I have had an absolute dream run. From the moment I had the 1st one inserted I have not had 1 spot of bleeding. I find that the discomfort the day it goes in is a bit like a period cramp but then it's all good. On the down side 2 of my friends have had them removed after bizzare bleeding. Myself, I would highly recommend it.

I have one, and I've already had it for 2.5 years it is the best thing, Infact about 6 months in my period nearly dimished, I have not experience any side effects, do know though your periods might last a day or two but you still Feel everything about them example cramps, moodiness sometimes this is the only way I know I have my period.

My husband cannot feel it because my obgyn tucked the strings in, and they have not fell out yet !! Inserting the mirena was a little uncomfortable, some doctors use a little local painkiller but some do not, mine DID ask for it.. so far so good infact I am planning to have another one as soon as this one expire in 2.5 years....

I have the Mirena, I love it and so does my husband.  I am not moody when that time of the month comes, and it only comes once every two to three months. My periods are much lighter and only last two to three days.  It is like heaven, I can plan things now! We knew that we did not want any more children right now so it was a great option.  It was a simple procedure that was done as an office visit, a few small sharp pains, and she was done.  Now I am not woring about it any longer.  We can focus more on our daughter, and not woring about another until we are ready.

I had the Mirena for about 6 months or so. I had it taken out because I gained 15 pounds. I lost the weight after I had the IUD taken out. My girlfriend had hers taken out also because she was constantly spot bleeding.

if your breast feeding hold off on getting the Mirena for a while. It will interfere with your breastfeeding. I learned this the hard way. I have had two. The only thing I didn't like was that you never knew when a period was coming. With the Mirena I was lucky to have two a year. For me I chose the Mirena because it was easiest method of birth control, can have for 5 years and easy to have put in place. Once in you can forget about it, and when ready to have it removed, can be done in your physician's office.

i had it fitted 10 years ago.Cant comment on its use as a contraceptive as i have been single for years! but it is great for stopping periods and i have no side effects. Very painful having it fitted the second time tho but worth it.

I have had the Mirena for seven years now, my first one was great, I had no problems. Then with the second one I gained about 50 lb. and can not lose it. I feel as if I am pregnant a lot, but I am not. I have all the symptoms of pregnancy, with out the coming joy of knowing there will be baby, that part sucks! Other then the weight and symptoms of pregnancy I will keep mine and continue to redo it ever five years!

I love it! It's really been no problem at all, I would recommend it! The only complaint I have is that I cramp the day before my period starts and it feels a little different than it did before I had the Mirena put in, but it's not a big enough complaint that I wouldn't recommend it, ya know?

I have not used the mirena but I know what it is and what it does. I will also tell you I have the other iud the paraguard or copper T that is 10 year one (and I am on my third 1)or iuc as it is being referred to now days. If I was allowed to use the mirena I would use it. I will tell you expect to spot or have weird bleeding and cramps for a little while after it's placed. Also be prepared that you could lose it without knowing it causing you to unintentionally not be in birth control till you figure it out...good luck with ur decision

I had one for about 2 years and it was fine, no spotting or fluctuating hormones.

No weight gain unlike Depo provera.

I've had mine since April '09....only complaints so far is the weight gain, and my periods are lighter but they last longer....and the spotting...I LOL'd at the comment "I live off panty liners", i def identify. It does depend on each woman's body. I'm not moody, and dont have bad cramps. It seems to be working out ok, the good outweighs the bad for me.

Hi I have a 2 1/2 year old. I had Mirena placed right after i had my son and loved it. No period for over a year. Had it taken out in March 2009. Finding it difficult to concieve baby #2. Not sure if there is a link or not. But I would get another one and HIGHLY recommend it. Hope I helped.

[deleted account]

I have had mine for 4 months. I have had a period with it for 4 months!!! Non-stop. I'm holding out a bit longer because if I regulate, then it will have been worth it I guess. I also have been dizzy and my baby weight is much harder to get rid of this time. hmmm.... Not really sure why I'm doing this to myself! I really hate all forms of birth control though.

I don't have Mirena brand, but I do have an IUC (what they now call IUD) - great experience, had it for 3 years, took it out to have a third child, had a new one put in after he was born.

Not to have to think about birth control at all is a huge plus.

I got it at my 6wk ck up after giving birth. I love it! Have had no side effects except that my monthly visit is very mild (had really bad craps before). My husband does not complian either. The only bad thing about it was the cramp like feeling when it got put in....have not felt it since then. Oh and my insurance paid for it all! Bonus! I'm very open so if you have any other questions feel free.

I had it put ini about 9 months ago and I love it! No period (or very little), and no side effects! It was a little worrysome in the being with no period I was a little peranoid about being pregnant, but after getting used to it, I think it was the best choice for me! I had really painful periods before, and sometimes I do get minor symptoms (mostly achey legs) and I would definately recommend talking to your doctor about it.

Come to think of it, Kathy I've had bad acne problems as well since I got my mirena.
Possibly it could be connected.

I had the Mirena for one year. In that time I gained twenty pounds which would not come off no matter how hard I tried and I am a runner. My face broke out all the time, and I developed large cysts on my neck which are now scarred. I spotted all the time so had to always have a panty liner. My experience was not great but I see that many others love it so I guess it is worth a try....maybe it will work great for you!

They work great, but the bleeding lasts forever it seems. it took three solid months after i got mine for the bleeding to stop and then it only stopped for a week and then started again. If you can handle that then it's a good idea, but if you can't i suggest you go with a ring or the depo shot.

I've had the 5 year one for almost 4 years and it has been great! Almost painless when inserted by the doctor and has given me NO problems. I love that I can play with my daughter and enjoy my husband w/o having to think about taking birth conrtol! Hope that helped!

[deleted account]

There's good and bad to it. I've had it for over a year and I do experience most of the "side effects" I had my period for about 3 months right after it got put it, that was somewhat inconvenient :) now I only get irregular spotting, I never know when it's coming, which isn't exactly the easiest to deal with, I think one mom quoted "live with panty liners" she was pretty much right on the ball with that one. All in all, with the side effects I want it removed, and I probably would not recommend it to my friends. I do however, have friends who have it and love it. I guess it depends on you.

Ive had mine for a while now, I have had cramping. The day I had it put in I cramped really bad, like labor cramps...then a couple months later I was cramping too. But Ive had other problems as well such as a biopsy and a leep procedure. I would recommend it though. Even though I had cramping its still great I dont have to worry about takin a pill or making an appointment for the shot. But I did learn this last night...I had sex a couple days ago and ouch I could feel him pushing it and it moved a little which created slight cramping but when that happens you can have the strings cut shorter and you wont have that problem...or if he complains of feeling it you can have the strings cut shorter. So even though I have had little problem I would totally recommend it!!!

I have had mine for 2 1/2 years. Best thing to happen to my sex lif since my husband.;) I took a pain killer before getting it in and didn't feel a thing. I am really sensitive to hormones so I was never able to stay on the pill, but this doesn't effect me at all. I can tell when my period is suppose to be here because I get tired and little moody, but it stopped my cramps and the actual bleeding. Only complaint is that my husband can feel it slightly, but not in a way that we would take it out. Good luck. Hope you find something that works for you.

hey chantel i got one put in when you little man turned one its great no stress about taking pills or getting something cut out your arm every year it can come out any time if your thinking of having another child, i really havnt seen any side effects other than i dont really get a big period just spotting for s few days. but im guessing every one is diffrent my mum has one too she got it because of her meneporse and she felt a little weird for about a month till it settled in but nothing too bad just feeling a little bit of period pain, but she said it was nothing like she use to have when she was younger. i think they are good for brestfeeding mums because we still get a little pregnance brain every now and then even when our little ones are born hope this helped

I have had Mirena a year now. The 1st few months were a bit uncomfortable due to cramping, but since then I have had no problems what-so-ever & it has reduced my periods to almost nothing. In fact, I no longer need tampons or pads just panty liners & if I do have a period it is a couple of days of spotting. Best choice I could have made w/ nearly no side affects or having to remember to take anything thus a chance of an unexpected pregnancy. Hope this helps/

I like it. Had it for about a year now and had no issues. I love not having to take the pill anymore. Still have my periods on a regular basis though, which I hoped would stop as I was told. No issues otherwise. It's a no brainer...

Hi. I'm Tiffany. Um, yeah, actually I have the Mirena in now. It's been in since 2006 and honestly I'm quite pleased with it. There is a five year plan and a ten year plan. I think perhaps the ten year plan has a different name, however, I chose the five year. The ten year has copper in it, so I was uncertain about copper being inside of me. But regardless, after my five years are up I can just have that one taken out and a new one placed in, for another five years I'm sure. As far as side affects go... my boyfriend (or EX rather) thinks that perhaps my LACK of sexual anticipation may be caused from the insert. But I'm not so sure. (I have my own reasons for that, that I think may fit the bill a bit better...lol) However, other than that, I 'spot' about every other month once in a day the whole month. So really, it's conveinent, and so far, working well. I'm not brave enough to tie my tubes and say ABSOLUTELY no more kids, but the Mirena allows ME to be in control of that. (Perhaps if I ever find a guy who will treat me the way I should be treated, I may birth another. The next time 'round shall be for husband only, no more boyfriend BS. lol.)

I went to get mine put in yesterday, and she couldn't even get the measuring stick thing in! My cervix was too closed, so now I have to go back later after I have taken some prescription to soften it. I never though that that would be an issue, I'd asked around and no one told me that that could happen :S so I'm telling you because I was very disappointed I couldn't get it in that day. And if the prescription doesn't work, then I won't be able to get it at all :( I wish I had been warned that there is a chance your body won't cooperate right :P lol.

i love mirena as birth control. i must admit that it was very uncomfortable (for me) when it was inserted and at at first i had sporadic, though lighter flowing, menstrual cycles, with spotting in between, after about 6 months this stopped and now i don't cycle at all. i have now had mine for about 2 and a half years and have not had any negative side effects! good luck with whatever you decide!

Hello Chantel, I have had a merina and I must say that it was very convenient, long lasting and painfree. I never felt it while it was in although, my husband did mention a few times that he could feel the strings poking him during sex but wasn't a huge deal. my hormones were a bit crazy when i first got it put in and for a few weeks after I had it taken out but nothing that was worrisome or unmanagable. I had it for 3 years and had no pregnancy scares or birth control stress. I conveniently had it removed during one of my in office check ups when my husband and I decided we were ready for another baby. I personally was extremely pleased with the IUC's effectiveness and convenience. No daily pills or painfull shots. I'd say that if your OBGYN feels its right for you then its a good idea.

XOXO,

Veronica Lynn Ramirez

P.S

I just delivered my second baby and I'm planning on having another merina inserted during my 6 wk postpartum check up.

I've had Mirena for 2 years now. I have acne that I can't get rid of, but I don't know if Mirena is to blame for that. Also, when my doctor put it in, he kept the string to long so it was uncomfortable for a while. I'm going to go back on the pill, but I just don't have time to go to the doctor to get it removed.
