Tics in my 8 year old

My son has always been incredibly active. He seems to have such a high level of energy and it takes a lot for him to be worn out. It takes a while for him to sleep, but he does sleep well at night, always waking early mind you.

A couple of years ago he started doing these shoulder moves, and then head moves and eye raising - mostly all individual, but then sometimes all at once. These happened for a couple of months and then stopped.

They would happen a couple of times for a week or so during the school year and then mostly stop over the summer.

This year however, we had nothing for a long time, then two weeks before school, it was like a mass break out of all the tics he could muster. jumping, shoulders, mouth, eyes, and some grunting. He also raises his hands in the air sometimes. Plus makes shapes with his fingers.

He does not like school (but not unusual for an 8 year old boy) he is a good student - struggling mostly in math, but doing well in all other subjects. It does take a bit for him to keep focussed, and he is incredibly forgetful.

His tics have not yet bothered him, but they bother him when he sees me looking at him. I try so hard not too, but he is my gorgeous little man, and it breaks my heart to see him like this. WE talk about his anxiety, and he says he feels anxiety for school.

We have noticed more recently that the tics come on more when he is relaxed - when he is concentrating and doing things, homework (which he hates) and reading (which he loves) he has very minor if any tics. But once sitting and watching TV it all comes on.

I do not want to medicate him, and I have an appt for a neurologist for mid next year - but I have read so much about natural supplements like attentive child, by natural sources, and there seems to be so many good reports - I am a little skeptical. I cannot seem to find much in depth reading about it.

I was wondering if anyone could give me more insight in to this natural method, and wether its all just hype or it really does work.. I am worried about doing anything, and do not want to make matters worse.

I have also read Magnesium or lack of is another trigger for tics?

any help would be appreciated.
