Tips on Moving From a Crib to a Toddler Bed?

We are considering moving our son (he'll be 2 in April) from his crib to a toddler bed. Do you have any suggestions to make this transition easy, ideas on how to keep him in bed, or ways to keep him in his room if he does get out of bed? We want this transition to be as smooth as possible for him and us - any tips will be much appreciated!

Weird, we just bought our 3 1/2 yr old daughter a regular bed TODAY, she has been in a crib prior to this. I chose to wait since she has never climbed out of her crib, and I didn't want her getting into things in the middle of the night while we were sleeping. I am waiting now to see if she gets out and tears up our house. My suggestion would be to wait. :)

they sell a little safety net that fits under the mattress to keep them from rolling off. my girls were always more than ready to get a big kids bed that they could get in and out of themselves, it was a great help with potty training as well. As far as keeping them in their room lol good luck with that. It is only natural for them to explore their new freedom. Your son lasted much longer in his crib than any of my girls. Just try to make his room a safe place, a place he enjoys...a night light or something of that nature may help. with new freedom comes new anxiety. all of my girls went through a stage of being afraid of the dark and all of them outgrew it. also a bedtime routine will help...consistency is the key. good luck and God bless!

We just moved our son who is 20 months out of his crib to a toddler bed and it went pretty smooth to my surprise. He had a stuffed animal he slept with in his crib as well as his blanket so those were moved on to the toddler bed. My husband let him help make the toddler bed and we fussed over it all day so he was excited to be in his big boy bed. We put the toddler bed exactly where his crib had been. We normally closed our son's door so we kept doing so when he moved to a toddler bed but after a week or so he began to get up and be frightened by not being able to get out on his own so we now have it open but him just knowing he can get out seems to be enough now. He did start to get out of bed after a week or so. What we did was while getting pj's on we told him that he needed to stay in bed unless he really needed mommy and dad then when he did get up we walked him back to bed and said good night and left if he got up again we walked him back to bed but said nothing. It took him 4 times one night to understand he wasn't to get out bed till morning. We have found him sleeping on the floor but we ignored it and he went to sleeping in his bed after a few days. Hope your transition goes smooth.
