To Vyvanse or Not to Vyvanse???

My 11 year old son has recently been switched to Vyvanse 20mg after being on a combo of Aderral, Risperdal and Lexapro for a long time. We have been able to taper off of the Risperdal (which he was given originally to help with the side effects of Aderral and an additional dose for sleep at night) and he seemed to do well. He was doing ok but then began to appear angry and argumentative. Over school break we decided to take him off of Vyvanse (but continue Lexapro) to see if we would notice any change. He seemed to do really well and was once again happy and easy to redirect. He went back to school with just Lexapro and did well but now I am again noticing the ADHD behaviors - figetting, easily distracted etc. I understand that he needs the medication but I hate to see the anger come back :( HELP!

Is a non stimulant medication regime something you could consider? Adderall is a powerful amphetamine, and can often time make things WORSE! Especially mood swings! I've lived with ADHD all my life, perscribed adderall as an adult and it was just awful. I'm still recovering years later from the damage it did to me.

However, that is just my personal experience and I understand your son is not the same case. ADHD in kids is rough. My suggestion would still be to keep the stimulants down. Welbutrin is an anti depressant I use that also helps with some ADD/ADHD symptoms (focus, attention) without the crazy mood swings adderall and even lexapro gave me.

Constantly changing meds is really hard at this young age, talk to your doctor about what's going on with his moods, keep a journal. Every day write down his mood/attentiveness every couple hours and keep track of mood swings, then bring it to doc. A chart like that would be very helpfull in deciding treatment!

Good luck to you both
