took my 18 month old to the doctor today and he's diagnosed with croup

Didn't the doctor give you advice? Cool mist humidifier and prop the head of his crib up on blocks so his head his higher than his feet. If he does has respiratory distress during the night, you need to go back to the ER. He will make a wheezing sound, if you look at his chest, his skin will pull in around his ribs when he breathes, his lips may turn blue, he will have an awful barking cough. Kids with croup often seem fine during the day and then take a turn at night. If he becomes floppy or lethargic and wont' feed or rouse from sleep, go the ER promptly. Did the doctor not give you any suggestions as to how to handle the symptoms or when to come back to the doctor? It was often suggested a hot steamy shower runny and you sit in the bathroom with your coughing (barking) baby. More recent advice has cool steam as being more effective. If you can't make a cool steam then the bathroom with the shower running hot and steaming up the room is the next best plan.
