When do you feel is a good age to let a child walk home from school alone?

We lived in a small town when I was in the 4th grade and my brother was in the 1st grade. Our house was only two blocks from the school, and our parents allowed us to walk to school and back alone.

I think it depends on a lot of factors - not just the age of the child. How far will they be walking? How mature are they? Is the route complicated? Do they know the route well enough not to get lost?

This is tough. My kids think I'm a bit too over protective, but my 10 yr olds' (5th grade) school is just over a mile from home (not even counting main roads, just side streets) and I've only let her once. And, that was with a group of 4 of them coming to my house for the night. And, she took my cell phone to school that day. I do let her walk to our church alone often. It's 3/10 of a mile from our house. But, it's a straight shot...right up the same street we live on.
On the flip side, I see 4th and 5th graders walking all over town. We do live in a very small town with the nearest city a good hour away.

I think it can be different for all children. Is your child aware of strangers and that some can pose a threat? What is the route from home to school and vice versa? Is it a neighborhood where people know your family and would keep an eye out for something suspicious? I think there's a lot more involved to answering your question and only you can come to the appropriate conclusion.

Good luck! :)
