Ways to stop my 4.5 year old from sucking his fingers

So my son has been sucking his fingers since he was 4 months old. I just recently am getting desperate to stop it. Or at least limit it to bed time. He has had calluses on his fingers which he has recently started chewing and picking at. It even looks like he ripped on off. His teeth are gaped on the top. The moment we started to encourage him to stop sucking his fingers he started chewing his nails. He even is starting on his toenails now! Keeping him "busy" doesn't work since ANY moment both his hands aren't busy they are in his mouth. He knows why we don't want him to do it. But I know he just can't help it. He doesn't even think about it. This weekend I tried bandaids on his fingers with the calluses. It worked for the sucking, though one day he chewed a hole in the part directly covering the callus. I know that sucking his fingers is a comfort, and I want to allow him to continue to do so, but it is causing other problems I worry about. Is there more to this since he is chewing his nails all the time too? I don't know I'm at a loss.
