Weight gain and breastfeeding

My son is 6 weeks old and is breastfed exclusively. His birth weight was 3.9440kg and he weighed 3.58 kg after 5 days. His weight is 4.5 kg now after 6weeks and I am advised by doc that I start giving him 60ml of formula once a day as his weight gain is less. He is wetting around 8-10 diapers a day and is passing stools 1-2 times. I am feeding him every 45 mins when he is awake. Wondering whether it is really necessary to start formula this early? Any suggestions are welcome.

I wouldn't start formula if he has 8-10 wet diapers a day. Look at the breastfed babies chart and I'm sure you'll see your sons weight is just fine. The charts that doctors go by are just percentiles in order to have kids in the 50th percentile, you need to have some babies that are lower. If your doctor continues to gvie you a hard time I would start interviewing for a more breastfeeding friendly doctor.
