What is expected is very different for every school. Your best bet is to talk to the school and specifically ask that question to them.

You can always contact the kindergarten school your child will be attending to find out what they would expect him to know already. Sometimes they do not expect much, but also some places will do an evaluation for proper placement. I know my sons school did, but he is attending a charter school, and they are fairly strict.

If you are going to teach to write, use lowercase letters. Upper case are easier to write, but if you teach them that first, they have to learn still how to write in lower case. I have been told by pre-school and kinder teachers that it actually makes it so they have to teach them how to write all over again if they learn upper case first.

Learning his ABCs, 1 to 10, color and distinguish them. He has to know his full name and write it at least, say his address, number and tie his shoes. So far that's what I know and the teacher have told me. He will also need to know structure and following direction.

Here are a few things they should know....their alphabet, recognizing some letters, if not all, they should be able to count to 10, and be able to spell their name.
