What is the right age to let your child stay home alone?

I feel a little lost here. Times have changed since I was a kid and now I don't know the right age for a kid to be home alone. I worry that I am being overprotective or to relaxed. I would love to hear what other mom's think and how they made the decision for their family.

It depends on the law in your area, the maturity of your kid/kids, and your (and their) comfort level.

I was home alone for hours at a time by 9. I preferred being home to going certain other places, but I hated being alone. I never left any of my kids under 9. By 9 I left the oldest a handful of times for a half an hour or less. So far it hasn't ever been longer than that though. I'd rather bring my kids along with me whether they want to or not. ;) I don't generally do stuff without them unless they are in school or with someone else.

I live in a state that doesn't have a specific age law. Many that DO have the law have the age of 12, but some states are younger (8 is the youngest with a specific law). I 'think' only one state has the law of 14, but I'm not sure. It's been a while since I checked.
