Jesses turning ten next month, he's asking for an iPhone and when he was eight I got him an itouch and told him if he could be responsible w/ his I touch for two years I would get him an iphone. Should I?

Well, lets look at this logically.

You already promised him, two years ago that you would do this. Personally, I'd not have caved to an 8 YO and gotten him an itouch, but that's me. I didn't feel my kids needed that level of electronics at that age...I preferred to have them choose to be physically active...but...

So, you promised 2 years ago. Has he been responsible with the itouch? Has he demonstrated that he can take care of his responsibilities, etc, and be responsible about his access and time on the device? If so, then you need to fulfill the promise that you made. If he has not, explain that he has some work to do, and give him a more realistic age for getting a phone. I wouldn't purchase an iphone at any rate, but again, that's me.

Funny thing about technology...I've found that, with a minimum of expense I can have 'almost' the same features as a $600-$700 phone, without the expense, or the worry.

My kids didn't get phones until they were in middle school. They didn't need them prior to that, and the only reason they got one then was due to the disappearance of public phones. NO KID needs an iphone. Period.

I wouldn't have made a promise about an iPhone in the first place, because personally, I don't think a 10 year old needs a damn iPhone. I can tell you now, my 10 year old will not be getting ANY kind of smart phone until she can pay for it from the job where SHE earns the money, just like her older brother did. However, too late now, you made a promise. If you don't, he won't trust you next time.

What happened to getting 8 and 10 year olds lego sets for their birthdays?
